About Mahina Young
Mahina Young was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 49, in September 08. The cancer was in an advanced stage, stage 4. Since the cancer was so advanced he decided to have a radical prostectomy, removing the entire prostate. Because of the late diagnosis, his cancer had already spread outside of the prostate, to the margins and lymph node system. Since the cancer had spread, he then went through 35 radiation treatments and is currently on hormones.
We were totally unprepared for the diagnosis since Mahina had no history of prostate cancer in his family. Traditionally a PSA test is not done until age 55. Because of what he has gone through, Mahina feels called to become a spokesperson and advocate for early screening for prostate cancer. It is a simple blood test that could save lives. We also are passionate about making others aware of the effects of prostate cancer and providing support to those who have been diagnosed and their families. We created the Mahina Young Charitable Fund to give us a vehicle to reach out to others, create awareness of prostate cancer and raise funds for research.
