Meet the Board of Directors

Mahina Young Charitable Fund is an Oregon Non-profit organizion whose mission is to create opportunities to educate men about prostate cancer and encourage screening as well as raise funds that will help in the awareness and prevention of Prostate Cancer. The Mahina Young Annual Golf Tournament,  our signature event to raise funds and awareness, is held each year in the spring. The money raised at this event is donated to organizations that promote awareness and screening of Prostate Cancer or research. Last year proceeds were donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. This year proceeds will be donated to Dr. Thomasz Beer’s research group at the OHSU Knight Cancer Foundation.

Mahina Young- President

Mahina is a prostate cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer in September 08 at the age 49. Since then he has undergone a radical prostectomy, seven weeks of radiation and is currently on hormone therapy. Mahina feels called to raise awareness of prostate cancer as well as raise funds to find a cure. Mahina lives in Portland with his 3 dogs, Stella, Lizzie and Moe and his wife Kristen. His favorite pastime is golf.

Kristen Young- Secretary

Kristen is an accountant whose life changed when her husband, Mahina was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While researching options for Mahina, she discovered how little awareness there is about prostate cancer and the need for funding to find a cure. Prostate Cancer is not just a man’s disease, it affects the entire family.

Morgan Smith

Morgan Smith is the Manager of Real Estate Services at OnPoint Community Credit Union. Morgan has been in the mortgage lending and real estate business since 1995 when he founded Morgan Financial.  Morgan lives in Portland with his wife Thao, son Reeder, Labrador Retriever Jackson and is expecting twin boys in the spring. "I became interested in the MYCF Prostate Awareness Campaign as a direct result of Mahina's illness. Mahina is a healthy active individual I have a lot in common with. When I heard and saw how this disease had effected him, it was a harsh and difficult reminder of how fragile life can be. Being a healthy and active middle aged man, I considered myself immune to the consequence of cancer. When I saw it affect a friend and fellow man my age, it hit home"

Tim McDonald

As a classically trained chef, Tim McDonald currently works for Food Services of America as a sales consultant.  Tim and Mahina have been close friends since they attended the California Culinary Academy together in San Francisco.  Tim currently lives in Tigard with his wife and two children and his favorite pastime, besides cooking, is fly-fishing. “Until my friend was diagnosed, I was clueless to the frequency and seriousness of prostate cancer.”  With Prostate Cancer hitting so close to home with his best friend, it is essential for Tim to be part of this Board to help raise Prostate Cancer awareness.
